Within the New Kadampa Tradition, we offer three unique Study Programs
• General Program (GP)
• Foundation Program (FP)
•Teacher Training Program (TTP)
All three programs use as their basis the books written by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso that render an unparalleled amazing presentation of Kadampa Buddhism for the Modern World – so practical and yet preserving the essential meaning of all Buddha’s teachings.
These programs are generally distinguished by how much structured study we want to do. General Program classes include all of our drop-in classes and workshops, open retreats and empowerments, and do not require additional study by the student outside of class time in order to participate. In Foundation Program, students proceed very much as if they were in a college class, attending all the classes, with commitments for reading outside of class, homework and practice commitments as appropriate to the text being studied. Finally in Teacher Training Program, it is similar to pursuing a whole degree path, where we commit not just to one course, but to a course of study that will help give us the ability to become qualified Teachers of Kadampa Buddhism.
General Program (GP)
The General Program (GP) is open to everyone regardless of previous experience or background. These classes provide a basic introduction to meditation and Buddha’s teachings that are suitable for beginners. The purpose of these classes is to help people gain a personal experience of inner peace, overcome daily problems, and find real lasting happiness from within.
The GP includes all our drop-in classes, courses and some retreats
Foundation Program (FP)
The Foundation Program (FP) is designed for people who wish to deepen their understanding and experience of Kadampa Buddhism through a systematic study of essential Buddhist commentaries by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. This is not a drop-in class, enrollment is required. People are generally required to have attended GP (drop-in) classes for a minimum of 6-months before joining the Foundation Program.
There are currently two books being studied:
Mondays 6:30-8:30pm How to Understand the Mind
With Resident Teacher, Gen Kelsang Sanden
Thursdays 6:30-8:30pm Eight Steps to Happiness
With Senior Teacher Jill Arseneau
Areas Outside of Abbotsford – Correspondence For individuals who live outside of the Fraser Valley or who are unable to travel to Abbotsford to participate in Foundation Program, we offer How to Understand the Mind with Resident Teacher Gen Kelsang Sanden by correspondence. The Teacher Training Program (TTP) provides a more extensive presentation of particular subjects of Kadampa Buddhism for those who want to deepen their knowledge and experience of Buddhism and to train as qualified New Kadampa Tradition teachers. This committed study program covers 12 of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s books on Sutra & Tantra, and requires a series of meditation retreats.
TTP is not a drop-in class and enrollment is required. Students must have received Highest Yoga Tantra empowerments in order to study in the program. We are currently studying Tantric Grounds and Paths with Resident Teacher, Gen Kelsang Sanden.
